The future of Engineering is fun! Mechanical design, as it is taught in engineering colleges seldom meets the manufacturability, time constraints, cost constraints as well as stress analysis that is a prerequisite for vehicle manufacturing. With this in mind, the SAE Mini Baja® competition was started at the University of South Carolina in 1976. Since then, the competition has grown to become a premier engineering design series with three Mini Baja® competitions held annually under the sponsorship of SAE.
SAEINDIA Student members have participated in BAJA activities outside India from 2004.
From 15th Sept 2006 the BAJA SAEINDIA competition was launched in India. Since then many prestigious engineering institutions and auto organisations have joined the competition and through sponsorship, the prize money has also become well worth the while.
As a part of the TVS philosophy of investing in the future, MyTVS a business division of TVS group came forward to sponsor the team of young engineers from College of Technology, Coimbatore. Calling itself the ‘BAJA BHAIS’, this enterprising team won the overall championship in the National level JK TYRE Baja SAEINDIA competition by securing 3rd PLACE. The event was held at the NATRiP in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh from the 29-31st of January, 2010 with a total participation of 80 teams.
The MyTVS BAJA BHAIS team also won the runner-up award for BEST ENGINEERING DESIGN along with a Total Cash Prize of 2.4 Lakhs. The competition involved each team designing and building an off-road recreational vehicle that could be marketed to a fictitious firm. Team ‘Wings’ from MIT, Aurangabad stood FIRST in the overall awards followed by Team ‘Mechismu’ from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
With the Lamborghini Engines and Mahindra & Mahindra Transmissions supplied to them, the Baja Bhais made their vehicle after three months of meticulous planning and ingenious engineering. Their vehicle was the centre of attraction at the event with its appealing looks, aggressive graphics and coroplast body work. Beside an adjustable driver seat position, ample space for driver comfort and high ground clearance, their design also used Lithium iron batteries and alloy wheels to reduce weight.
Static events such as marketing, costing and design evaluation took place on the 1st day of the competition. Dynamic events which include Acceleration, Maneuverability and Hill Climbing took place on Day 2. The 3rd day was the big final day which saw the cars racing on a rugged off-road track in a 3 hour endurance race. Only 37 vehicles managed to complete the 21-lap race.
The driver of the team Baja Bhais, K R Pravin Kumar, raced his way through from the 25th position in the grid to the top 5 by the end of the 1st lap, putting in all the experience he had gathered from his rally races. A steering ball joint failure suddenly hit the Baja Bhais team during the race, thanks to the competent team mechanics, the problem was fixed in less than ten minutes and the car finished 3rd in the standings. Points from all the individual events were put together and the overall winners were selected.
This vibrant Baja Bhais team was lead by Vijay Satyanarayanan, a final year B.E. - Automobile Engineering student and guided by faculty advisors Dr. S Neelakrishnan and Mr. R Ravichandran. MyTVS – ‘Multi-Brand Integrated Car Services’ powered the team. The team is already equipped with a SWOT analysis of the event and is gearing up take another shot at the top spot next year!
